On Wednesday, Twitter released a statement in response to a Reuters investigation which found that it used the platform to disseminate Russian propaganda during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. In their report, Twitter says they have “identified and suspended several accounts for what we believe to be unlawful political activity.” The company is “actively working with law enforcement on this matter.”

@AP_Politics, @RealAlexJones, and @Infowars were suspended by Twitter. Twitter shut down three suspicious automated accounts: @AM2_DonaldTrump, @CNNPRogressBot, and @MSNBCBottrack. Each of these accounts had a following of approximately 10,000 people and tweeted about ten times daily.

Twitter’s statement says its “mission is to give everyone a voice and bring the world closer together. We cannot allow anyone to use our platform for hate or violence.”

Twitter COO Adam Bain Speaks Out

Twitter COO Adam Bain spoke out about the Reuters investigation on Wednesday, denying that the company has been hiding user data. “Twitter is not hiding user data,” Bain said in a statement. “We have always been transparent about how we collect and use data,” Twitter revealed in September that it had handed over data from more than 3 million Russian users to Congressional investigators. The investigation looks into potential collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.

Twitter’s Response to the Investigation

Twitter has released a statement in response to the Reuters investigation into election meddling. In the report, Twitter says it is “actively working with law enforcement to bring those responsible for these activities to justice.” Twitter also says that it will continue to investigate and take action against any accounts that violate its policies.

As a result of the investigation, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said he was “saddened and angry.” In addition, he said Twitter is taking steps to prevent this from happening again and that the company is committed to protecting the integrity of elections.

Twitter also released a report on what happened during the election, which you can read here. The report includes information on how Russian actors used Twitter to spread disinformation, promote political violence, and attack reporters.

Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya has spoken out about her meeting with Donald Trump Jr., claiming she was misled over the forum’s purpose and never agreed to help campaign for his father.

The Russian lawyer signed up to represent Trump Jr on the understanding that she would provide him with information on Hillary Clinton. Instead, she presented herself with Kushner’s email chain, which showed collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

In an interview with Reuters, Veselnitskaya said she thought the meeting might be about lifting sanctions imposed by former president Obama and suggested that you could have set it.

What Twitter is Doing to Address the Issue

In the wake of a recent Reuters investigation that revealed Twitter had been enabling Russian agents to spread disinformation and propaganda on the platform covertly, the social media company has announced several changes designed to address the issue.

First and foremost, Twitter requires all users who sign in with a verified account to use two-factor authentication to prevent unauthorized access. It will help ensure that only authorized people can view or share sensitive information on the platform.

Twitter is also changing its rules so that tweets from authenticated accounts will now be ranked higher in search results. It should help make it easier for people to find relevant content when looking for information on the platform.

Finally, Twitter is introducing new guidelines to address hate speech and extremist content on its platform. These new policies will require organizations wishing to promote their content on Twitter to obtain a permit from Twitter and undergo an audit process. It should ensure that harmful content isn’t allowed onto the platform without proper vetting.

Conclusion

Twitter has responded to Reuters’ report that the company had knowledge of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and did not take appropriate action. The statement read, “We have found no evidence Twitter was involved in electoral interference on any level.” In addition, Twitter said it would be making changes to its policies and procedures over the next year to prevent such incidents from happening again. It is a big step for Twitter in light of Russian meddling on Twitter.
